During Bonfire Night disorder in Birmingham, fireworks were used to target police officers and members of the public. West Midlands Police arrested 21 people, including four teenagers, on suspicion of violent disorder. The arrests occurred in the Dale End and Staniforth Street areas on Wednesday evening.
The police deployed Section 60 powers to conduct stop and searches without needing reasonable grounds. Weapons and fireworks were seized during the operation. Although fireworks were set off dangerously by young people, no serious injuries were reported.
"In total we arrested 21 people, aged between 14 and 25, for a number of offences including violent disorder, assaulting a police officer, breach of the peace, and firing fireworks in a public place," said West Midlands Police.
Section 60 powers were set to remain active until 06:00 GMT on Thursday to help maintain public safety.
Insp Matthew Minton commented on the response: "We had robust plans in place [on 5 November] to respond to any Bonfire Night disorder. Behaviour like what we have seen overnight will not be tolerated, and those responsible will be held accountable."
