The Orioles are set to sign free agent outfielder Leody Taveras, according to reports by Mike Rodriguez. The agreement is pending a physical, and the team has not yet made an official announcement.
Taveras spent the last five major league seasons with the Texas Rangers. He made his MLB debut in 2020, initially serving in a part-time capacity. While his batting performance was limited during his first three years, he made valuable contributions with strong center field defense and speed on the bases.
In 2023, Taveras played a larger role, participating in 143 games and accumulating 554 plate appearances. He hit 14 home runs, stole 14 bases, and finished with a slash line of .266/.312/.421. This performance helped him maintain a significant role in 2024, although his hitting declined.
During the 2024 season, Taveras posted an 84 wRC+ over 529 plate appearances, with a batting average of .229. He set a career-high of 23 stolen bases but struggled offensively.
Seattle designated Taveras for assignment in mid-June, and after clearing waivers, he was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma. The Mariners had claimed him off waivers from Texas in early May. A few weeks ago, Taveras elected free agency.
