Electricity restored in Moss Park more than 24 hours after power outage

Electricity Restored in Moss Park After Over 24 Hours Without Power

Nearly 600 customers experienced a power outage from 8:11 a.m. Wednesday caused by an underground cable fault, according to Toronto Hydro.

Power Restoration and Cause of Outage

Toronto Hydro restored power around 1 p.m. Thursday, more than 24 hours after the outage began.

“As our crews continue underground repairs, we’ve identified that the cable fault causing this outage appears to be the result of a suspected third-party dig-in at an active construction site in the area,” Toronto Hydro stated on social media just before 4:30 p.m.

The utility clarified that the damage was unrelated to their own work but involved harm to their infrastructure.

Repair Challenges

According to Toronto Hydro, repairs were slow and complicated due to the fault's location.

“The repair process was complex and time-consuming as it involves safely identifying, repairing and testing the damaged infrastructure before we can return it to service.”

Initial estimates for power restoration shifted from 8:30 a.m. Thursday to 11:30 a.m., before being delayed to the afternoon.

Extent of the Damage

“The damage caused by the third-party contractor is extensive, with the dig-ins occurring in multiple spots,” said Toronto Hydro.

Toronto Hydro continues work to prevent future outages and assess damage impacts.

Author's summary: The Moss Park power outage lasting over 24 hours was traced to extensive underground cable damage caused by an unauthorized third-party construction dig, complicating repair efforts.
