A federal judge blocked the Trump administration’s plan to limit sugary drinks, candy and soda under the SNAP food benefit program.
The proposed rule could have narrowed what food stamp recipients could buy as part of an initiative to lower obesity rates among economically disadvantaged families.
The judge ruled the administration didn’t have unquestioned authority to enforce such a ban.
For now, SNAP benefits stay as they were, allowing users to purchase those items unchanged.
The proposal had sparked months of opposition from lawmakers and advocacy groups.
