Gators’ Olivier Rioux Makes Historic College Basketball Debut

Florida’s Olivier Rioux, standing 7-foot-9, made his much-anticipated debut against North Florida, becoming the tallest player in college basketball history. The game ended with a decisive 104-64 victory for the Gators.

On Thursday night at the O’Connell Center in Gainesville, a crowd of 10,065 fans erupted in chants of “Oli, Oli, Oli” as Rioux entered the game with UF leading 102-61 and just over two minutes left on the clock. Despite having joined the team in summer 2024, this was his first time playing in a college game.

“It felt great,” said the 19-year-old Canadian. “The support from everybody was amazing. Even on the bench and even with the fans. I’m very grateful.”

Although Rioux did not record any points or rebounds, the crowd gave him a standing ovation. His debut marked a new chapter in college basketball, breaking the record previously held by 7-foot-7 Kenny George, who played at UNC Asheville between 2006 and 2008.

“It’s another day, I guess,” Rioux commented modestly about his historic entry onto the court.

Coach Todd Golden responded to the enthusiastic crowd by sending Rioux onto the court during the celebration of the team’s 2025 championship banner unveiling.

Author’s summary: Olivier Rioux’s college basketball debut set a historic milestone, making him the tallest player ever to step onto a college court, inspiring fans and teammates alike.
