The PlayStation Portal, a handheld console that has flown under the radar, is finally receiving cloud gaming support. Sony aims to enhance the device by enabling users to stream select digital PS5 games directly through the cloud, without needing to connect to a PlayStation 5 console.
The Portal depends on streaming games from an existing PlayStation 5 and is not a standalone device. Despite the Steam Deck's success in offering true portable gaming, only about 3% of PlayStation 5 owners had purchased a Portal by last summer.
Sony recently announced that PlayStation Portal owners can now access cloud gaming through PlayStation Plus. This allows streaming of certain games from the user's digital library independently of their console connection.
"This includes ‘select digital PS5 games from their own library’ and cloud streaming through PlayStation Plus — but without the requirement of connecting to the console itself."
Access to cloud gaming on the Portal requires a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, which costs $17.99 monthly or $159.99 annually. For subscribers, this update significantly enhances the value of the device beyond just being a streaming screen.
"PlayStation Portal owners can only access cloud gaming if they have a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription — Sony’s highest subscription tier."
Sony's cloud gaming update makes the PlayStation Portal more versatile, but it comes at the cost of a premium subscription, which may limit its appeal.
Author’s Note: This update boosts the Portal’s functionality, but its reliance on an expensive subscription could restrict wider adoption.
