A woman and her young child tragically lost their lives after falling into a waterway in southeast Melbourne on Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred at Dandenong Creek, near Allan Street in Dandenong, around 3:45 p.m.
According to police, the mother entered the water in an attempt to rescue the child but soon began to struggle herself.
Emergency crews arrived promptly and discovered both unconscious. Despite administering CPR, neither could be revived.
The victims have not yet been formally identified. Authorities are preparing a report for the coroner to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
