Despite the downpour, the annual Saint Demetrios Parish Festival in Moonee Ponds was a resounding success on Sunday, 26 October.
The event, held in honour of the Great Martyr Saint Demetrios, patron saint of Thessaloniki and protector of the parish, began with a festive thanksgiving service marking the liberation of Thessaloniki, officiated by Bishop Eumenios of Kerasia.
Dance groups from across Melbourne, including the Cretan Brotherhood of Brunswick, Pontiaki Estia, Aristotelis Florina, and the Greek Community of Melbourne, filled the hall with colour and energy through traditional Greek dances.
Neither the torrential rain nor the unpredictable Melbourne weather could dampen the spirit of celebration.
The festival was a celebration of Greek culture and tradition, with the community coming together to honour their patron saint.
