Luke Macmichael, a follower of the FIRE movement (financial independence, retire early), practices extreme frugality. He saves half of his modest salary from working in technical support at Algoma Steel.
Macmichael, a 46-year-old father of six, drives a Toyota Corolla, which he describes as "the cheapest car on the lot." He estimates that he could have retired over a decade ago.
"I more or less feel like I've been retired since I was 35,"
Macmichael says, explaining that this sense of freedom comes from decades of discipline. He notes that "work is always better when you don't need the money."
Author's summary: Luke Macmichael achieves financial independence at 35.
