Bay Area food banks and community nonprofits are preparing to help thousands of people who may lose their federal food assistance benefits on November 1, if the government shutdown continues.
Families are scared.
A weekly distribution of fresh produce, dairy products, and canned goods was organized by the Redwood Empire Food Bank in Santa Rosa, where nearly 150 families attended. One attendee, Wanda Harris from Windsor, expressed her concerns about her federal SNAP or CalFresh benefits not being paid next month.
It's a godsend.
Harris noted that the food she receives is a lifeline, but she worries about families with children who may not be able to go without meals. The Trump administration has posted a notice stating that no federal food aid will go out on November 1.
